The Hanging Water Waterfall (Cascada Apa Spânzurată): The Cascade That Hangs from the Sky +video and views

Post by Laurentiu »

Among the many wonders of the Latorița Gorges (see more), Cascada Apa Spânzurată (The Hanging Water Waterfall) is perhaps the most surreal. Unlike traditional waterfalls that flow over a sloped rock face, this cascade literally "hangs" in the air, its stream being thrown off a massive, vertical limestone overhang.

A Natural Phenomenon
The waterfall is formed by a stream that reaches the edge of a tall cliff and, due to the sheer verticality and the inward curve of the rock, falls freely for tens of meters without touching the stone wall behind it. This creates a spectacular "liquid curtain" effect, especially after heavy rains or during the spring snowmelt.

Why the Name "Apa Spânzurată" (The Hanging Water) ?
The name is a literal description of how the water looks from the road. Because you can see light behind the falling water, it looks detached from the mountain, as if it were "hanging" or "suspended" in mid-air. It is a hauntingly beautiful sight that perfectly matches the wild, slightly mysterious atmosphere of the Latorița Mountains (see more).

Where to Find It
This is a traveler-friendly landmark because it is located right along the main forest road (DJ701D) that leads to Lake Petrimanu.
  • Location: As you drive through the Latorița Gorges from Ciungetu, keep your eyes on the high cliffs on the left side of the road.
  • The Sight: It appears suddenly—a thin, white ribbon of water descending from the towering limestone walls, seemingly coming out of the forest above the cliffs.
📸 Photography & Visiting Tips
  • The Best Angle: You can photograph it directly from the road, but for a truly dramatic shot, try to capture the scale of the limestone wall compared to the delicate stream of water.
  • The "Mist" Bath: If you stand near the base during a windy day, the "hanging" water is easily blown by the breeze, creating a refreshing fine mist that covers the road.
  • Safety First: While the waterfall is right by the road, do not venture too far into the thickets at the base of the cliff. The terrain is unstable, and as always, wild animals are unpredictable in these narrow parts of the canyon.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - Apa Spânzurată Waterfall
1. Where exactly is the waterfall located?
The waterfall is located in the Latorița Gorges (Cheile Latoriței), on the left side of the forest road (DJ701D) as you drive from Ciungetu toward Lake Petrimanu (see more). It is approximately midway through the most spectacular part of the canyon.

2. Why is it called "The Hanging Water"?
The name comes from its unique structure. The water flow is projected off a limestone ledge that curves inward, meaning the water falls vertically through the air without touching the rock face for most of its descent. From the road, it looks like a white thread "hanging" from the sky.

3. Can I see it from my car?
Yes! Apa Spânzurată is one of the most accessible waterfalls in the region. You don't need to hike; you can see it directly from the road. Many travelers stop their cars to take photos right from the window or the edge of the road.

4. Is it visible all year round?
While the waterfall is permanent, its appearance changes drastically. In spring, it is a powerful, roaring column of water. In summer and autumn, it often becomes a delicate, swaying "bridal veil" mist, which can sometimes be hard to spot if there has been a long drought.

5. Can I walk behind the waterfall?
While the rock curves inward, the base is filled with large boulders and dense vegetation. It is not recommended to climb up to the base, as the limestone is slippery and unstable. The best (and safest) view is from the road level.

6. Is it safe to stop on the road to take photos?
The forest road is narrow. If you stop, make sure to find a wider spot so you don't block logging trucks or other tourists. Also, be aware of the cliffs above; while rare, small stones can sometimes fall near the waterfall area. As a general rule in this wild canyon, wild animals are unpredictable, so stay alert even when you are just steps away from your car.
