Mărișel Village (Satul Mărișel)

Post by Laurentiu »

Perched on a vast plateau at an altitude of over 1,100 meters, Mărișel is the largest inhabited mountain plateau in the Apuseni Mountains. It is a place where the houses are scattered across the hills and where the "Moți" people have preserved a way of life that seems untouched by time.

The Legend of the "Pelaghia Roșu":
Mărișel is famous for its historical heroism. During the 1848 Revolution, a local woman named Pelaghia Roșu led a group of women who dressed as men and rode into battle to scare off the enemy. Every year, locals celebrate this victory at "Crucea Iancului" (Iancu’s Cross).

The "Moți" Culture:
The inhabitants are known as Moți. They are famous for their woodworking skills and their deep connection to the forest. You can still see traditional wooden houses and crafts being made by hand.

Biodiversity:
The plateau is surrounded by dense spruce forests. It is a perfect habitat for the black grouse and a variety of wild berries (see more) (blueberries and cranberries) that cover the hills in late summer.

The Starry Sky:
Because there is very little light pollution and the air is incredibly thin and clear, Mărișel is one of the best spots in Romania for stargazing.

Why a Foreigner Should Visit:
It offers a true "slow living" experience. You can go horse-drawn sledding in winter or hike across endless green meadows in summer, ending the day with a traditional "balmoș" (see more) (a local shepherd's dish).

Technical Quick Facts:
Altitude: 1,150 – 1,250 meters.
Location: Gilău Mountains (see more), Cluj County.
Main Attraction: The landscape (The "Scattered" Village) and Crucea Iancului.
Access: Via a spectacular winding road from Lake Tarnița or Gilău.
