Post by Laurentiu »

Nestled at the foothills of the Southern Carpathians, the Curtea de Argeș Monastery is more than just a religious landmark—it is a masterpiece of stone lace and the setting for Romania’s most poignant legend.

A Royal Necropolis
Built in the early 16th century by Prince Neagoe Basarab, the cathedral is a stunning display of Byzantine architecture with Moorish and Armenian influences. Its most striking features are the twisted minaret-like towers, which give the structure an ethereal, almost fluid appearance. It is also the final resting place of the Romanian Royal Family, including King Carol I and Queen Elisabeth.

The Legend of Master Manole: Built on Love and Loss
Every stone of this monastery carries the weight of a haunting tale. Legend has it that whatever the masons built during the day would crumble by night. To break the curse, the chief architect, Master Manole, was told in a dream that he must immure the first person who arrived the next morning.

To his despair, that person was his own wife, Ana, who was coming to bring him lunch. Forced by his oath, Manole built the walls around her, her cries fading as the stone rose. It is said that the monastery finally stood firm only after this supreme sacrifice. Today, a red mark on the southern wall still points to where Ana is whispered to be resting.
