The Thermal Snail (Melcul Termal): A Prehistoric Survivor +views

Post by Laurentiu »

In a small, warm corner of western Romania lies a creature that has defied time for thousands of years. The Thermal Snail (Melanopsis parreyssii) is a tiny mollusk with a giant story, living only in a single, specific habitat on the entire planet: the thermal waters of the Pețea Lake (see more) near Băile Felix.

A Living Fossil from the Ice Age
While most of Europe was covered in ice during the last Glacial Period, this small snail survived thanks to the geothermal springs of the Pețea Creek.
  • Thermal Adaptation: It lives in water that naturally stays between 25°C and 30°C all year round.
  • Unique Habitat: Its entire world is limited to a small area in Băile 1 Mai, near Oradea. This makes it one of the rarest endemic species in the world.
The Miracle of Survival
What makes this snail extraordinary is its resilience. It shares its warm home with other rare species, such as the Thermal Water Lily (Nymphaea lotus var. termalis) and the Racoviță’s Rudd (a rare thermal fish). Together, they form a "tropical" oasis in the middle of a temperate climate, a remnant of a prehistoric era.

An Endangered Treasure
For a few years, the Thermal Snail was considered extinct in the wild because the thermal lake dried up due to excessive water extraction. However, thanks to the heroic efforts of Romanian biologists:
  • The Rescue Mission: Specimens were saved and kept in controlled laboratory environments.
  • The Comeback: Recently, efforts have been made to repopulate restored sections of its habitat. It remains a symbol of conservation in Romania.
The Legend of the Immortal Snail
Locals say that the Thermal Snail is not just a survivor of the Ice Age, but a "Guardian of the Eternal Spring." The legend tells of a time when a great frost covered the entire continent, turning everything into ice. While all other creatures fled south or perished, this tiny snail refused to leave. It found a small patch of water that never froze—the "Eye of the Earth" (Ochiul Mare). It is said that the snail made a pact with the warm spirit of the mountain: in exchange for protection, the snail would stay and testify for eternity that life can survive even the harshest winters as long as there is a spark of warmth.

That is why, even today, people say that as long as the Thermal Snail exists in the waters of Pețea, the thermal springs of Romania will never dry up. It is seen as a living talisman of the Bihor region, a symbol of resilience and hope.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. Where can I see the Thermal Snail?
The natural habitat is the Pețea Lake Nature Reserve in Băile 1 Mai, Bihor County. However, because it is so small and protected, it is easier to see its history at the Țării Crișurilor Museum in Oradea.

2. How big is the Thermal Snail?
It is very small! The shell usually measures between 15 mm and 20 mm in length. It has a dark, elegant, spiral-shaped shell.

3. Can I take a snail as a souvenir?
Absolutely not. The Thermal Snail is strictly protected by law. Taking one or even disturbing its habitat is a serious offense, as the entire species' survival depends on every single individual.

4. What else is special about the Pețea Lake?
Besides the snail, it is the only place in Europe where the Thermal Water Lily (with large, white, fragrant flowers) grows naturally in thermal water. It’s like a piece of the Nile River found its way to Transylvania.
