The Stone Giants of the East: Exploring the Ciucaș Mountains (Masivul Ciucaș) +video and views

Post by Laurentiu »

The Ciucaș Mountains are often described as a natural open-air museum. Located in the Curvature Carpathians, this massif is famous not for its extreme heights, but for its bizarre and spectacular conglomerate rock formations. Shaped by wind, rain, and frost over millions of years, these rocks have taken on mysterious shapes that have sparked legends for centuries.

The Land of Stone Figures
The most iconic landmarks of Ciucaș are the "Stone Ladies" (Babele la Sfat), the "Goliath" rock, and the "Pigeon's Rock." Walking among these massive limestone and conglomerate structures feels like wandering through a city of sleeping giants. The highest peak, Ciucaș Peak (Vârful Ciucaș), reaching 1,954 meters, offers a 360 degrees panorama that, on clear days, allows you to see all the way to the Bucegi (see more) and Făgăraș (see more)ranges.

Legends of the Ciucaș Giants

1. The Council of the Old Women (Babele la Sfat): The most famous legend says that the stone towers at the top of the mountain are actually old women who were turned into stone. Long ago, they were shepherds who climbed the mountain in early spring, defying the unpredictable weather. To protect themselves from the cold, they wore multiple layers of sheepskin coats. As the sun grew warmer, they threw away their coats one by one. But the mountain is unforgiving—a sudden, freezing blizzard caught them without their layers, and they froze where they stood, turning into the massive stone pillars we see today, forever locked in a silent conversation.

2. The Legend of the Shepherd Goliath: There is a massive rock formation known as Goliath. Legend says he was a giant shepherd of incredible strength who guarded his flock in these mountains. He was so tall that he could step from one peak to another. It is said that he eventually turned to stone to watch over the Ciucaș ridges for eternity, ensuring that no one disturbs the peace of the "Stone City."

A Garden in the Sky
In June, the mountainside turns a vibrant pink as the Mountain Peony (Rhododendron) (see more) blooms across the ridges. It is also one of the best places to find the rare Edelweiss clinging to the rocky cliffs. The landscape is a mix of gentle alpine pastures and dramatic, jagged towers, making it a favorite for landscape photographers.

Why visit Ciucaș?
  • Unique Geology: The conglomerate structures are unlike anything else in Romania.
  • Accessibility: The trails are generally accessible, making it perfect for both seasoned hikers and families.

Is the hike difficult for beginners? The route from the Ciucaș Cabin to the main peak is moderate and very rewarding. However, the weather can change in minutes, so always have a waterproof jacket and proper hiking boots with good grip.
