The Three Noble Species
Romania is home to three main types of vipers, each with its own kingdom:
- The Common Adder (Vipera berus): The most widespread, often found in the Carpathian meadows and cold mountain regions.
- The Nose-horned Viper (Vipera ammodytes): The most famous and largest, easily recognized by the small "horn" on its snout. It loves the warm rocks of Banat and Dobrogea.
- The Steppe Viper (Vipera ursinii): A rare and protected treasure, found in the Danube Delta (see more) and specific steppe areas.

In Romanian folklore, snakes have always held a dual role:
- The House Snake (Șarpele Casei): While not a viper, this myth influenced how Romanians see all snakes—as guardians of the land.
- Ancient Dacia: The Dacian Draco, the famous war flag, had the head of a wolf but the body of a serpent. It suggests that our ancestors viewed the serpent’s strike as a symbol of speed and lethal protection.
- The Healer’s Symbol: Historically, the viper was both feared for its venom and respected for its "magical" properties in old folk medicine.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vipers in Romania
How many species of vipers live in Romania? There are three main species: the Common Adder, the Nose-horned Viper, and the rare Steppe Viper.
Are Romanian vipers lethal to humans? While their venom is potent, fatalities are extremely rare. Most cases are treated successfully with anti-venom available in hospitals.
How can I distinguish a viper from a harmless snake? Vipers have a thick body, a zigzag pattern on their back, and vertical, cat-like pupils.
When are vipers most active? They are most active from April to October, especially during the morning when they bask in the sun to warm up.
What should I do if I get bitten? Stay calm, immobilize the affected limb, and call 112 immediately. Do not try to "suck the venom" or use a tourniquet.
Will a viper attack me unprovoked? No. They only strike as a last resort if stepped on or cornered. As we know, wild animals are unpredictable, so keeping a respectful distance is key.
