From Scout to Soldier
Born into a modest peasant family in Gorj, Ecaterina’s journey didn't start with a gun, but with a desire to help.
The Nurse: When Romania entered World War I in 1916, she initially served as a nurse (scout).
The Turning Point: After seeing four of her brothers die in battle, especially the death of her brother Nicolae, she decided that mourning wasn't enough. She convinced the military commanders to let her join the front lines as a regular soldier.
The "Heroine of the Jiu"
Ecaterina proved her bravery in the heavy fighting along the Jiu River.
The Prisoner's Escape: Captured by the enemy, she managed to escape by shooting two guards with a hidden revolver.
Wounded but Unbroken: Despite being severely wounded in both legs by a shell, she refused to stay in the hospital. As soon as she could walk, she returned to her regiment.
Military Honor: For her exceptional courage, she was decorated by King Ferdinand I and promoted to the rank of Second Lieutenant, taking command of a platoon.

The Final Sacrifice
On August 22, 1917, during the Battle of Mărășești (the "Muncelu" sector), Ecaterina led her platoon in a counter-attack. Her last words, shouted to her soldiers, remain etched in Romanian history:
