Siriu Dam (Barajul Siriu): The Giant Made of Earth and Stone +video and views

Post by Laurentiu »

Located on the spectacular DN10 road that connects Buzău and Brașov, the Siriu Dam is a monumental engineering feat. Unlike most dams made of concrete, this one feels like a natural part of the mountain, holding back a turquoise lake that stretches for over 11 kilometers.

Biodiversity & The "Eagle's Lake"
The area around Siriu is a wild sanctuary (part of the Natura 2000 network). The surrounding forests are home to:
  • The Chamois: Though rare in other parts of the Buzău Mountains, they can still be spotted on the steep cliffs of the Mălâia Ridge.
  • Fish Species: The lake is a paradise for fishermen, hosting clean, trout, and barbell (mreană).

The Legend of the "Bottomless Lake"
High above the dam lies Lacul fără Fund (The Bottomless Lake). Local legend tells of a shepherd who, bored with his life, threw his staff into the water and left his flock. Years later, he supposedly found the same staff floating in the Danube, leading locals to believe the lake is connected to the heart of the earth through mystical underground channels.

Fun Facts for Travelers
-No Cement!: One of the most mind-blowing facts about the Siriu Dam is that it was built without using any concrete. It is the second-largest embankment dam in Romania, made entirely of rock, clay, and sterile soil. The clay core becomes waterproof only when it touches the water.
-A Sunken Village: To build the dam, the entire village of Siriu-Băi had to be sacrificed. When the water level is very low, some say you can still feel the memory of the old community beneath the waves. The local cemetery and even the church had to be moved, hill by hill, to higher ground.
-The "Teherău" Viaduct: Driving across the lake, you will pass over impressive viaducts. The Teherău viaduct is particularly famous as it looks like it’s suspended directly from the mountain walls.

Why Visit?
Siriu is the perfect destination for those who find beauty in raw, industrial-meets-natural landscapes. It's ideal for kayaking, photography, or starting a hike toward the Siriu Peak (1,662m).

Frequently Asked Questions: Siriu Dam & Lake
1. How do I get to the Siriu Dam?
The dam is located on the DN10 national road, which connects the cities of Buzău and Brașov. It is about a 1.5-hour drive from Buzău or 1 hour and 15 minutes from Brașov. The drive itself is one of the most scenic in Romania, passing through the Buzău River valley.

2. Can you walk across the dam?
Yes, there is a pedestrian path along the top of the dam. It offers a spectacular 360-degree view: on one side, the vast turquoise lake, and on the other, the steep 122-meter drop into the valley below.

3. Is the road to Siriu (DN10) safe for driving?
The road is paved and generally in good condition, but it is very winding and can be narrow in some sections. During winter or heavy rain, be cautious of occasional falling rocks or slippery patches. It is a favorite route for motorcyclists due to its beautiful curves.

4. Can I visit the "Eagle's Lake" (Lacul Vulturilor) from the dam?
Yes, but it requires a challenging hike or a 4x4 vehicle. The trail starts near the village of Siriu and takes about 3.5 to 5 hours to reach the lake on foot. The "Eagle's Lake" is located at an altitude of 1,420 meters and is famous for its wild beauty.

5. Is wild camping allowed near Lake Siriu?
While many people set up tents along the shores, it is important to remember that this is bear country. If you choose to camp, never keep food inside your tent and use designated camping areas if possible for better safety.

6. What is the best time of year to visit?
Late spring (May-June) is beautiful for the lush green mountains, but autumn (October) is truly magical when the surrounding forests turn vibrant shades of orange and red, reflecting in the blue water of the lake.
