A Sanctuary for Birds
If you are a birdwatcher, Lake Băclănești is your paradise. Because the water is relatively shallow and the surrounding reed beds are thick, it provides the perfect nesting and feeding ground for:
- Great White Pelicans: Large colonies often gather here to fish in groups.
- Egrets and Herons: You can see them standing motionless among the water lilies, waiting for their prey.
- The Glossy Ibis: A frequent guest of these quiet waters.

The Legend of Lake Băclănești: The Fugitive's Sanctuary
Local stories say that the name Băclănești comes from a very old word used by the Lipovan fishermen, referring to a "place of refuge."
Legend has it that long ago, a young fisherman named Băclan refused to join the Sultan's army and fled deep into the heart of the Delta. He found this hidden lake, which was so thick with reeds and "plauri" (floating islands) that no large boat could enter it.
Băclan lived there for years, protected by the maze of channels. It is said that the birds of the lake — the pelicans and the egrets — became his friends and would signal him whenever strangers approached. He survived by fishing and drinking the sweet water of the lake. Eventually, others who sought freedom followed him, and the place became known as "the place of the Băclănești" (the followers of Băclan).
To this day, locals say that if you sit very still in your boat at dawn, you can still hear the "whispers of the reeds" telling the story of the man who chose freedom in the heart of the waters.
The Floating Garden
One of the most beautiful sights on Lake Băclănești is its "carpet" of water lilies. Depending on the season, the lake's surface is covered with:
- White Water Lilies (Nymphaea alba): Opening their petals to the morning sun.
- Yellow Water Lilies: Adding a splash of vibrant color to the deep greens of the Delta.
- How to reach it: Access is only possible by boat, usually from the village of Mila 23 or Crișan. It’s part of a complex of lakes that includes Lake Fortuna (see more).
- Best time to visit: Late spring and early summer (May-June) when the birds are most active and the lilies are in full bloom.
- Respect the silence: This is a protected area. Please keep the engine noise to a minimum and never disturb the nesting birds.
