Sarmizegetusa Regia: The Sacred Heart of Ancient Dacia +video and views

Post by Laurentiu »

High in the Orăștie Mountains, shrouded in mist and ancient legends, lies Sarmizegetusa Regia. More than just a fortress, it was the political, military, and religious soul of the Dacian Kingdom before the Roman conquest in 106 AD. Today, a UNESCO World Heritage site, it remains one of the most mysterious and spiritually charged places in Europe.

The Three Pillars of the Capital
The site is divided into three distinct areas that showcase the advanced civilization of the Dacians:
  • The Fortress: Built using the unique murus dacicus (Dacian wall) technique, these massive limestone walls protected the nucleus of the kingdom.
  • The Sacred Zone: This is the most iconic part of the site, featuring several sanctuaries. The Great Circular Sanctuary acts as an ancient calendar, proving the Dacians' advanced knowledge of astronomy.
  • The Civilian Settlement: Spread across dozens of artificial terraces, this area included homes with advanced clay pipe water systems—a luxury for that era.

Legends and Mysteries: The "Stonehenge" of Romania
  • Kogaionon, the Holy Mountain: Many believe Sarmizegetusa Regia is built on or near the mythical mountain Kogaionon, where the supreme god Zalmoxis was said to dwell.
  • The Sun of Andesite: A stunning circular stone altar used for religious ceremonies, often compared to solar symbols found in other great ancient civilizations.
  • Hidden Treasures: For centuries, legends of "Dacian gold" buried beneath the ruins have captivated locals. While many treasures like the famous gold bracelets have been recovered, much of the site’s history remains buried.
Biodiversity: Nature Reclaiming History
Sarmizegetusa is not just about stone; it’s about the forest. The ruins are surrounded by centuries-old beech trees that seem to "guard" the sanctuaries.
  • The Guardians of the Woods: Keep an eye out for the European Roe Deer or the Black Woodpecker.
  • Unpredictable Wildlife: As always, remember that wild animals are unpredictable. While bears and wolves roam these mountains, they usually avoid the main tourist paths, but a respectful distance is mandatory.

Frequently Asked Questions: Sarmizegetusa Regia
Is Sarmizegetusa Regia the same as Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa? No. This is a common mistake! Sarmizegetusa Regia is the original Dacian capital hidden high in the mountains. Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegetusa was the Roman capital built by Emperor Trajan later, located in the valley about 40 km away.

How do I get there? The site is accessible by car from Orăștie. Follow the road to Grădiștea de Munte. There is a modern paved road (DJ705A) that leads to a parking area. From there, it's a pleasant 1 km walk on a paved path to the sacred zone.

When is the best time to visit? Late spring and early autumn are magical. The morning mist among the ancient beech trees creates a mystical atmosphere that is perfect for photography.

What should I wear? Even in summer, the mountains can be cool. Wear comfortable hiking shoes for the stone paths and bring a light jacket.

Are there wild animals in the area? Yes, the site is located within a National Park. While rare, bears and wolves live in these forests. Remember, wild animals are unpredictable—stay on the marked paths and do not leave food scraps behind.

Is there an entrance fee? Yes, there is a small fee (approx. 15-20 RON) [3-4 EURs] which helps with the ongoing archeological preservation and site maintenance.
