Hidden deep within the wild Latoriței Mountains, near the village of Mălaia, lies a natural wonder that was only "rediscovered" by the wider public a few years ago: Cascada Scoruș. Standing at a staggering height of approximately 101 meters, it is widely considered the highest vertical waterfall in Romania, a breathtaking silver thread draped over a colossal stone wall.

A Hidden Masterpiece of Nature
Unlike many famous waterfalls that are easily accessible from the road, Scoruș requires a bit of effort to reach. The trail takes you through a virgin forest, following the Scoruș stream upstream. The air grows cooler and the sound of crashing water intensifies as you approach the hidden canyon. When the forest finally opens up, the sight is overwhelming—a massive, sheer cliff with water plunging down in a single, elegant leap.

The waterfall's name comes from the "Scoruș" tree (Rowan or Mountain Ash), which is common in this high-altitude area. The mist created by the fall keeps the surrounding rocks covered in a vibrant, emerald-green moss, creating a landscape that feels like it belongs in a fantasy novel.

The Legend of the Shepherd and the Silver Thread
Local stories from the Vâlcea region speak of a time when the mountains were inhabited by giants and spirits. The legend of Scoruș tells of a young shepherd who followed a lost lamb high up the canyon walls. As he reached the top of the cliff, he encountered a "Zână" (a mountain fairy) who was weaving a long, silver veil.

When the fairy saw the shepherd's kindness toward his lost lamb, she dropped her silver veil over the cliff to help them climb down safely. It is said that the veil turned into the waterfall we see today—an eternal silver thread that never stops flowing. Locals believe that those who wash their faces in the cold mist of the waterfall will be blessed with the "clarity of the mountain spirits."

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Is it truly the highest waterfall in Romania? Yes, with a drop of over 100 meters, Scoruș surpasses other famous falls like Cailor [Horses waterfall] (Click HERE to see more) or Duruitoarea in terms of a single, vertical leap.

2. How difficult is the trail? The trail is of moderate difficulty. It’s not very long, but it can be slippery and steep in certain sections. It is not recommended for very small children or people with mobility issues.

3. Are there bears in the area? Absolutely. This is a wild, less-traveled part of the Carpathians. Wild animals are unpredictable, so always hike in groups, talk loudly to avoid surprising a bear, and carry bear spray if possible.

4. Can I see it from the road? No, the waterfall is completely hidden by the canyon walls and dense forest. You must hike to see it.
