The Emerald Secret of the Carpathians: Unveiling Lake Vidra (Lacul Vidra) and the Legend of the Thief River +landscapes

Post by Laurentiu »

While the famous Transalpina road (Click HERE to see more) draws thousands of travelers to the peaks of the Parâng Mountains (Click HERE to see more) , a silent giant lies hidden just a short detour away. Lake Vidra (Lacul Vidra), an immense expanse of emerald water nestled in the heart of the Lotru Mountains, is one of Romania’s most spectacular—and often overlooked—destinations.

If you are looking for silence, raw nature, and a touch of mystery, this is where the road should take you.

A Hidden Gem in the "Green Gold" of Romania
Located near the resort of Voineasa, Lake Vidra is the main reservoir of the Lotru-Ciunget hydropower system. But to the traveler’s eye, it is a masterpiece of nature and engineering. Sitting at an altitude of nearly 1,300 meters, the lake is surrounded by dense spruce forests that reflect into the water, creating a surreal, mirror-like effect.

Unlike the bustling Vidraru Dam (Click HERE to see more), Lake Vidra often feels completely deserted. It is a place where you can hear your own thoughts, interrupted only by the wind moving through the fir trees.

The Legend of the "Lotru" (The Thief River)
The beauty of Lake Vidra is matched only by the turbulent history of the river that feeds it: the Lotru River.

In Romanian etymology, the word lotru implies "thief" or "outlaw." According to local legends, these dense forests were once the impregnable hideout of the Haiducs (Romanian outlaws/Robin Hood figures).

The Tale of the Hidden Gold: Legend says that centuries ago, haiducs would descend from these mountains to ambush wealthy merchants crossing the valleys. They would retreat deep into the wild forests where no army dared to follow, hiding their stolen gold in caves and buried under ancient trees. The river was their accomplice, its fast and dangerous currents sweeping away anyone foolish enough to chase them.

Today, the massive Lake Vidra covers some of those ancient paths. Locals whisper that on nights with a full moon, the "cursed gold" of the outlaws still glimmers from the bottom of the lake, protected forever by the deep waters.

Why You Should Visit
  • The Drive: The road winding along the lake offers spectacular views, perfect for a slow drive with the windows down.
  • Photography: The contrast between the deep green forest, the grey rocks, and the changing colors of the water (from blue to turquoise) makes for moody, cinematic photos.
  • Solitude: It is one of the few places left where you can truly disconnect from the modern world.
⚠️ Important: Respect the Wild
Because Lake Vidra is less commercialized than other spots, it remains a true wilderness. This means nature is in charge here.
  • Admire the forest from the safety of your car or designated areas.
  • Never leave food waste behind, and never attempt to feed or approach wildlife, no matter how calm they appear.
How to Get There
Lake Vidra is easily accessible if you are driving the Transalpina (DN67C). From the intersection at Obârșia Lotrului, take the road toward Voineasa. The lake will unfold on your right side, accompanying you for kilometers of breathtaking scenery.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions: Visiting Lake Vidra
1. Can I swim in Lake Vidra? It is generally not recommended. Lake Vidra is a mountain reservoir used for hydroelectric power. The water is extremely deep, cold even in summer, and the currents can be strong near the intake structures. There are no lifeguards or official beaches. It is best enjoyed from the shore or by boat if you have authorized access.

2. Is the road accessible for all cars? Yes, the road connecting Obârșia Lotrului to Voineasa (DN7A) is paved. However, mountain roads can deteriorate after harsh winters, so expect some bumps or potholes. During winter, check road conditions beforehand, as snow can make the area difficult to access without a 4x4 or chains.

3. Are there restaurants or hotels right on the lake? The shores of Lake Vidra are quite wild and undeveloped. The nearest accommodation and food options are usually found at Obârșia Lotrului (at the tail of the lake) or further down in the resort town of Voineasa. It is smart to pack your own water and snacks for the drive.

4. Is it safe to camp near the lake? While camping is popular in Romanian mountains, you must be extremely cautious here. As mentioned earlier, wild animals are unpredictable. This area is deep within the habitat of bears and wolves. Camping in non-designated, unfenced areas carries significant risk. It is safer to stay in organized campsites or cabins at Obârșia Lotrului.

5. What is the best time of year to visit? Summer (July-September) is ideal for lush green views and escaping the city heat. Autumn (October) offers incredible photography opportunities as the deciduous trees turn gold and orange against the evergreen firs.

6. Can I fish in the lake? Yes, fishing is possible, but you usually need a valid fishing permit for mountain waters. Trout is the most common catch here. Check with the local forestry or fishing association in Voineasa for the current regulations.
