The Giant of the Wetlands
The Codalb is a masterpiece of evolution. In Romania, these birds are the apex predators of our waters. They are famous for their "bravery"—they don't just hunt fish, but are known to challenge even the largest herons or steal catches from other birds. Their white tail, which gives them their name, only appears when they reach full maturity (around 5 years of age).

In Romanian tradition, the eagle has always been a solar symbol, a link between the earth and the heavens:
- The Imperial Guardian: Because of its size and piercing gaze, the Codalb was often seen as a protector of the boundaries, a bird that watches over the land from the highest peaks or the most remote marshes.
- The "Bălan" Spirit: The name "Bălan" (meaning white/fair-haired) evokes a sense of purity and ancient wisdom. In some folk tales, the eagle is the one who helps the hero reach the "Other World" or brings back the water of life.
- The Symbol of Longevity: Seeing a Codalb was considered an omen of a long and prosperous life, as these birds can live for decades in the wild.

Where is the best place to see White-tailed Eagles in Romania? The Danube Delta is their primary residence, but you can also spot them along the Danube River (see more), near the Iron Gates (see more), or at the Olt River reservoirs.
How big is a White-tailed Eagle? It is massive! Its wingspan can reach 2.4 meters, making it significantly larger than a Golden Eagle.
What do they eat? Mainly fish and water birds (like ducks or coots), but they are also opportunistic scavengers, especially during winter.
Are they dangerous? They are apex predators, but they avoid humans. However, wild animals are unpredictable; if you find a nest, stay far away, as they are very sensitive to disturbance during the breeding season.
