Vâlcan Mountains (Muntii Vâlcan): The Wild Frontier of the Southern Carpathians +video and views

Post by Laurentiu »

If you are looking for Romania's untamed spirit, the Vâlcan Mountains (Munții Vâlcan) are your perfect destination. Part of the Retezat-Godeanu (see more) group, these mountains offer a rugged landscape where history meets raw nature.

🏔️ A Hiker's Paradise and a Historical Landmark
The Vâlcan Mountains are famous for Pasul Vâlcan (Vâlcan Pass), an ancient mountain pass that connected Oltenia with Transylvania. This path was used by Roman legions two thousand years ago and later became a strategic point in the World Wars. Today, you can hike or bike through these historic trails while enjoying panoramic views of the Jiu Valley.

📜 Legends of the Vâlcan Mountains
1. The Legend of King Sigismund (The King's Stone) One of the most famous stories says that in the 14th century, King Sigismund of Luxembourg was retreating through these mountains after a lost battle. Legend has it that his horse lost a golden shoe in a pass, and the king himself rested on a massive rock. That rock is known today as "Piatra Regelui" (The King’s Stone). Locals say that if you look closely at the cliffs, you can still see the spirit of the ancient guardians watching over the pass.

2. The Outlaw’s Path (Haiducii din Vâlcan) The Vâlcan Mountains were the favorite hiding place for Haiduci (Romanian outlaws). These were Robin Hood-like figures who stole from the rich boyars and gave to the poor. Legend says that many caves in the Vâlcan ridges still hide "comori blestemate" (cursed treasures). It is said that only those with a pure heart can find the entrance to these hidden hoards, usually marked by a mysterious light on the night of Sanziene (midsummer).

3. The Giant’s Footprint There is an old myth about giants who lived in these mountains long before humans. In some areas, the strange shapes in the limestone are called "Urmele Uriașilor". It’s said that the giants were so large they could step from one mountain ridge to another with a single stride, and the Vâlcan peaks were their stepping stones.

🦌 Wildlife and Biodiversity]
This massif is a biodiversity hotspot. Its deep forests and limestone ridges are home to golden eagles, chamois (capra neagră), and a vast array of rare mountain flowers. Because the area is less commercialized than the Bucegi or Făgăraș mountains (see more), the nature here remains in its purest state.

⚠️ A Note on Safety
Because the Vâlcan Mountains are so wild, encounters with large predators are possible. Wild animals are unpredictable, and the shepherd dogs in this area can be very protective of their flocks. Always hike with a map (or GPS), stay on the marked trails, and keep a safe distance from any wildlife or sheepfolds you encounter.
